Most of us are focused drivers who obey traffic laws at all times and keep an eye out for other drivers and pedestrians. However, even the most experienced and responsible drivers can fall victim to distraction from time to time. And with April being Distracted Driver Awareness month, we wanted to take a few moments and shine a light on some of the activities that can distract you from your focus on the road ahead.
The Most Common Distractions
There are a lot of factors that can distract you from the road when you’re behind the wheel. We’ve taken the time to list some of the most commonplace.
Cell phone usage – While this has been echoed many times, it bears repeating–your phone calls and text messages can wait. The moment between a collision and avoiding one happens within the blink of an eye.
Adjusting your stereo and infotainment screen – Many manufacturers place the infotainment screen at eye level to minimize distractions. Needless to say, they still occur. If you find yourself in the middle of a busy traffic pattern, ask your passenger to make the adjustments if you have one. Keeping yourself focused on the road is more important than what you’re listening to.
Eating & drinking – Because many of us live our lives on the go, the drive-through is how we sustain ourselves when lunch is on the run. While you might be in a rush, eating and drinking while you’re behind the wheel is a great way to get easily distracted.
Driving while tired or fatigued – One contributing factor that doesn’t get discussed enough when it comes to driving distracted is driver fatigue. Tired driving is dangerous driving. If you start to feel drowsy behind the wheel, roll your windows down or pull over. Arriving late at your destination is better than not arriving at all.
